In Japan, due to a rapidly ageing population, a whole new category of vehicles called 福祉車両 (meaning ‘Welfare Vehicles’) or Welcab in Japan, were created to make it easier to transport wheelchair-bound people. Recognizing that it was difficult to lift up and carry disabled people even if you're physically strong, 'Welcab' technology has evolved to enable easy access by simply pushing in the wheelchair occupant straight into the car, with some utilizing motorized winches or lifts.
